Big news on the 3D front.

Sources indicate that George Lucas is set on rereleasing the “Star Wars” franchise in new 3D conversions beginning in 2012. Although 3D versions have been rumored for some time, Lucas purportedly was waiting until there were enough screens available to make the release a sizable event.

Fox, which released all six original “Star Wars” films, also would release the 3D versions.

Episode I, “The Phantom Menace,” would be first out of star-dock during early 2012. After that, each film would be released in order at the same time in consecutive years, depending on how well the first rerelease does.

Each conversion takes at least a year to complete, with Lucas overseeing the process to make sure each is as perfect as possible. He has said that the “Avatar” experience convinced him that “Star Wars” is ready for the state-of-the-art 3D treatment.

This whole 3D fad is going to make everyone go cross-eyed pretty soon. As much as I hate that everything is being released in 3D these days, this could actually be really cool. I think the 3D format should be reserved for movies that are truly “special”. This would be one of those.

This is Star Wars if it were a blackspoitation movie

Cameos by David Beckham, Daft Punk, Snoop Dogg, Franz Beckenbauer, Noel Gallagher, Ian Brown, Ciara, Jay Baruchel, DJ Neil Armstrong as well as your favorite Star Wars characters

Remember that great scene in Star Wars: The Empire Strikes back when Han saves Luke’s life on the planet Hoth by blasting open the Tauntaun and stuffing him inside the animal carcass to keep him alive? Well the guys over at ThinkGeek most certainly do and they have unveiled their very own Tauntaun Sleeping bag:

What better way to keep your young Jedi warm on a camping trip or a sleep over at a friends house then to be inside the warm furry Tauntaun sleeping bag! The guys at ThinkGeek took the time to think about all the little details to make this a great gift. It comes complete with saddle, internal intestines and get this it even has a glowing lightsaber zipper pull! How else would you be able to get inside without your lightsaber!

Too good to be true right?

Well it is… or is it?

You see ThinkGeek put this on their website originally on April 1st as an April fools joke. Take a look at it here they do a great job publicising it. They received an overwhelmingly positive response to it with many folks inquiring about wanting one. So they have contacted the “Lucas Empire” with their idea and it seems they are trying to work something out:

“ATTN Tauntaun Fanatics! Due to an overwhelming tsunami of requests from YOU THE PEOPLE, we have decided to TRYand bring this to life. We have no clue if the suits at Lucasfilms will grant little ThinkGeek a license, nor do we know how much it would ultimately retail for. But if you are interested in ever owning one of these, click the link below and we’ll try!”

There is also a link you can click on to sumbit your email address for when/if the item gets green lighted.

Unfortunately no word yet if this sensation will be coming to a galaxy near you anytime soon , but I think it would make a great idea if they could get it going!

Sound is a must for this one…

The rumors seem to be true. A live-action Star Wars TV show is in the works. It’s widely known that in late 2007, Lucas revealed that he and his team were about to begin writing scripts for the live-action show.  However, very little has been released on the topic since.  Now, according to the MTV movie blog, casting for the series is currently underway.

The show is supposed to be set between the end of Episode III and the beginning of Episode IV.  Evidently, they will be covering the rise of the Rebel Alliance as it gains momentum against the Empire.  The plot lines will follow minor characters from the movies.

I’m wondering if Jimmy Smits will be in the series.  This traditional TV star, known most recently from work in the HBO series “Dexter” as Miguel Prado, played a really small role in Episode II and III.  He would seem to fit the bill as one of the minor characters from the saga, while still having a good TV career and being able to pull of a large part in a series like this.

According to early reports, there will not be any on-screen appearances of either Darth Vader or any Jedi, so it looks like it will be a strait Rebellion against Clone Troopers sort of scenario.

If done right, I think this could turn out to be a masterpiece.  The Clone Wars on the Cartoon Network is actually pretty cool, but made for kids.  If they make this new Star Wars live-action series into a gritty action-drama, I think it could actually surpass Episodes I-III.   Lets hope that Lucas has learned from his successes and failures….  And lets double hope that he doesn’t rape Star Wars like he did Indiana Jones.

Here’s a audio clip (along with some creative video) of one of my favorite comedians Eddie Izzard.
