He had taught in, or headed, numerous academies before taking the position in Nashville. Felix Grundy, later a senator from Tennessee, had taken courses with him in an academy in Bardstown, Kentucky, and probably helped lure him to Nashville. Priestley was a rather eccentric man, somber and stern but with flashes of brilliance.

Typical of those influenced by the Scottish philosophy and by Locke, he stressed that humans had no innate skills or knowledge. Children were plastic, open to shaping influences. Any degree of intellectual excellence, any strong character, depended on education, and thus on those who supervised and trained youth. As he put it, even a child of the great Francis Bacon, if not educated, would end up as much a savage as the rudest Hottentot of Africa. Lindsley had read all he could find about educational theories.
