The principal subdivisions used in this monograph are Clovis, Folsom, and Late Paleoindian. The Clovis and Folsom periods are defined by the presence of distinctive fluted point styles that occupy relatively discrete time intervals.

The field data that I gathered came from investigation of natural and artificial exposures, from cores, and from hand-auger samples. , pedologic horizonation and structure, boundary, bedding, and color characteristics) were recorded in the field. Samples from most sections and cores also were brought back to the laboratory for further description and characterization using standard pedologic and geologic nomenclature (Soil Survey Division Staff 1993; AGI 1982; Birkeland 1984; Birkeland et al. 1991) with several modifications noted in Holliday (igg^b).

Howard's unusually comprehensive disciplinary breadth is best reflected in the papers of an international symposium on "Early Man" (MacCurdy 1937), which he organized while the work at Clovis was still under way (Roberts 1943). Thus began the long history of Paleoindian studies on the Llano Estacado. Moreover, this work at Clovis and neighboring localities was the first interdisciplinary archaeological project in the region (perhaps the first in North America) and established an interdisciplinary tradition on the Llano Estacado that continues today.
