In biaxial crystals, (defined by the condition εX = εY = εZ ), there are two special directions called the directions of the optic axes such that if k is parallel to an optic axis, the D and E vectors are parallel and they can lie in any direction as long as they are restricted to the plane perpendicular to k. Thus, for light propagation with k along the optic axes, the anisotropic medium behaves as an isotropic medium. It will be shown later that in biaxial crystals the two optic axes lie on the XZ principal plane, with the Z axis the bisector of the angle between the optic axes, and the tangent of the angle between the two axes is proportional to n2X − n2Y .
