The river was already frozen, so his men had to pull their birch-bark canoes across ice. They did not stop. In early February 1682, their canoes knifed into the wide waters of the Mississippi. By now, La Salle's party included 23 Frenchmen and 31 Indians. La Salle had two objectives: first, to navigate the full length of the Mississippi, which had never been 39 40 La SaUe and the Exploration of the Mississippi explored extensively by Europeans; and second, to construct French forts at strategic places along the river, giving his country a great advantage in the quest for control of America.

But rather than fight, Frontenac invited all the natives to sit down to a peace parley. The Iroquois were persuaded to let the French expand peacefully around the region of Lake Ontario-at least for the time being. Soon, a stone fort was built on Lake Ontario to protect French fur traders in that region. It was named Fort Frontenac. Unfortunately, construction of the fort had not received approval from the king. Governor Frontenac soon found himself in trouble. La Salle agreed to return home to resolve the situation.
