Not to mention the beautiful Blue Ridge Parkway is just a hop, skip & a jump away. Neatly tucked away about 25 miles Northeast of Boone is the small, but important settlement of West Jefferson. One of only 3 incorporated towns in Ashe County; West Jefferson boasts some truly beautiful scenery while still accommodating the shopper and artist in all of us. Up until the year 1914, the town was merely a small village with only a few stores. But when the railroad arrived, things changed and West Jefferson grew into its present-day “Mayberry-style” setting rather quickly.
Note the Gothic influence and the tall, impressive towers. Especially For You, a gift shop located in downtown, is filled with specialty items such as frames, wrought iron, lamps and cards. There is also an antique store and several furniture stores including Bobby Denning Furniture, W. R. , John Patterson Furniture Co. and Southern Furniture & Interiors. This 1,500-acre tract originally belonged to the Lords and Proprietors Grant from Charles II of England in 1663. Churches date back to the time when the land was settled in the mid-1750’s and there are references to a town called “Liberty” in transactions dating back to 1809. In the late 1800’s the town was known as an educational center, much in part to the beginning of the Liberty Academy in 1886. Soon the railroad came to town and the small village prospered. Today Liberty boasts many industries including furniture, hosiery, apparel, textiles and prefabricated buildings.
