Antisocialist feelings were strong in the Bay State as jobs became scarce after World War I. Many factory owners moved their industries to Southern states where the costs of doing business were lower. By the 1920s, hard times had hit Massachusetts, and immigrants were seen as a threat. The United States government felt threatened by ''reds" (as socialists were nicknamed) and conducted a series of raids, most of them in immigrant communities. " Two Massachusetts Italians, Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti, were afraid that they would be arrested for their political beliefs.

The strike succeeded. The unions and the owners reached a settlement in March. The workers earned wage increases, overtime pay, and other important gains. Another major dispute in Massachusetts, the Boston Police Strike of 1919, helped turn the public against the labor movement. On September 8, a small group of Boston police officers were suspended from the force because they wanted to join the American Federation of Labor, a national labor organization. The next day, more than a thousand police walked off the job.

Britain sent nearly 6,000 reinforcements to Boston. The British stormed the Patriots' position atop Breed's Hill (known as the battle of Bunker Hill) on June 17. The Patriots pushed the Redcoats back twice. On the third try, the British broke through because the Patriots ran out of gun powder. Salem Poor, a black rifleman, was one Patriot to receive a reward for his bravery during the battle. The Continental Army's luck began to change in March 1776 with the arrival of a supply of cannons that had been seized from the British.
