Expeditions such as those of Lewis and Clark in 1804, Pike in 1806, and Long and Schoolcraft in 1818–1819 hinted at the depth and breadth of the region’s natural resources and their intrinsic value. At its founding in 1821, Missouri’s influential citizens were already clamoring for the government to conduct accurate surveys in order to catalog these valuable resources and position them for expeditious development.
