The images created can be a little difficult to interpret, but are often the only way of detecting such detail and so are important in the serious study of comets. Another feature that can sometimes be teased out of images of the inner coma of brighter comets is shells of gas thrown off by the core.
After the images are taken. But if you are using a camera with an unregulated cooler it is best to take a set of darks at the beginning and at the end of imaging the object, and combine all of the dark frames to create a master dark frame. A strategy employed by those obtaining multiple images using cameras with no cooling is to take groups of dark frames at regular intervals throughout the night. For example, if you are taking 100 × 30s images of a faint cluster, you might take 10 dark frames at the start, 10 more after the 33rd image, a further 10 after the 66th and then another batch of 10 darks at the end.
On a night of poor seeing these may be relaxed somewhat to, perhaps, 10, 2 and 5 minutes, but the result will start to degrade quickly (as if poor seeing wasn’t bad enough) as the length of sequence used grows – particularly when imaging Mars and Jupiter. Obviously nothing – apart from cloud, disk space and fatigue – stops the observer creating a number of such sequences during the course of a night. The other planets have rather fewer distinct details visible in amateur telescopes, so detecting anything on Venus, Mercury, Uranus and Neptune is widely counted an achievement.
