In his first experiment, 12 participants of varying ages and experience drove two overlapping routes of 37 miles each. All the drives took place in daytime off-peak conditions. In the second experiment, eight different participants drove a route of 21 miles three times—once in daytime off-peak traffic, once in twilight rush hour conditions, and once in nighttime offpeak conditions. In both experiments, the route encompassed a variety of roads— urban shopping streets, urban arterial dual-carriageways, winding rural roads, and a motorway.

When the model outputs were compared to the real driver data, it appeared to perform well, although it was recognised that the addition of further parameters, such as gender, may improve its performance. The ADAPTATION project (2010–2013), coordinated by the French Research Institute, IFSTTAR, is also worthy of mention. Although not a research project in the Introduction 7 traditional sense, its goal is ‘to improve the career perspectives of young researchers by taking part in an innovative European research programme aiming at investigating drivers’ behavioural adaptation and its underlying processes over time in response to ADAS use’ (CORDIS, 2012).
