In 1913, Niels Bohr proposed a theory for the hydrogen atom based on quantum theory that energy is transferred only in certain well defined quantities. Taylor and Wheeler: Spacetime Physics Still the best introduction out there. Wag- ner, edited by Brian Hatﬁeld, “Foreword” by John Preskill and Kip S. It seems almost blindingly difficult to proceed with a mathematical analysis. The key insight of quantum physics is that some quantities in nature come in multiples of discrete values, called quanta. Even if the "mystery" of quantum mechanics can never be banished entirely, you might be surprised by just how far people could've gotten without leaving their armchairs!
