Watchmen: Reviews & Anticipation

Tonight I will watch the Watchmen!
Around the country director Zach Snyder’s interpretation of Alan Moore’s classsic Watchmen will officially come out tomorrow 3/6/09, but for those who can not wait many theatres across the country will open their doors for a midnight showing. I’ll be there as this is probably for me the most anticipated movie since the Fellowship of the Ring came out. My excitement started growing over the summer and just continued to build. It looks good visually so far from what I’ve seen, but I’m curious to see how they tell the story? What will they cut out? Because there will have to be cuts. How much back story will they tell? How will it end?
So, I’m interested to hear what folks think about the movie. Feel free to post your pre-movie hopes and fears, as well as your post movie reviews. I am particularly interested to hear what people who have not read the graphic novel before and don’t already have a love for the work think about the movie. I’ll try to get one up at some point on Friday but it will probably be the afternoon.

I am most excited to see this movie b/c it is a graphic novel that holds the title, one of the top 100 novels of the 20th century. I love superhero movies and this one seems like it has a lot of depth and a great story… it also looks graphically amazing!
I will be seing this Sunday… for anybody who wants to see it then.

Excitement? I’m totally stoked. If this movie is bad, I’m going to boycott movies for the rest of my life. It has to be good.
I’ll be interested in see the ZC reviews tomorrow. Lie to me if you think it’s bad

I hope they do justice to the novel as well, I have a good feeling about it…I think if you “get it” you’ll love it and if you don’t “get it”…..well then maybe you should not breed.
Looking forward to operating off of 3 hours of sleep, but I guess Hanzo, Admin and Scruffd0g would know all about that these days…

Okay I was largely okay with the movie last night. Let me assure you though that was not the emotion i was hoping would start my review going into the movie. It was faithful for the most part to the comic which was a good thing. It looked very good visually, but for some reason i left the movie theatre going “Eh it was good but it did not blow my doors off”
I did not feel attached to the people in the story much because even though it is 2 hours and 45 minutes it was hard to draw a passionate connection to many of them except for my boy Rorschach who they spend some time on.
The one part about the movie that was horrible was the music selection. The choices just seemed out of place (except for all along the watchtower with it’s two riders were approaching line as night owl and Rorschach approach Oz’s temple in Antarctica). They may have had some symbolism but they did not seem to fit. Music is supposed to amplify a scene and to me it just seemed out of place for the most part.
Don’t get me wrong i enjoyed the movie but I thought it could have been far better.
I’m concerned for the masses who have not read the graphic novel. I knew the background story so i did not need the movie to prop itself up for me. Will average Joe the plumber just going to check this out dig it? I’m not sure.
When we were leaving there was a small splatter of hand clapping, but not the roar you get usually from a fan favorite at a midnight showing.
If you read the graphic novel it is a must see. Even if like me you are slightly disappointed.
Sorry if that made no sense i’m pretty tired

I’m agreeing with you SoItGoes, the movie started out with a bang (1st song choice opening scenes, explaining the back-story)…and beside really getting the essence of Rorschach they really skimmed over other story lines (had to cut it 2:45 somehow right?)..although I did like some of the operatic musical scenes the overall soundtrack cohesiveness was…eh? and I expected the musical choices to be part of the WOW for me…
I give it a sold B and maybe a B+, I will buy this on Blu-ray for the extended edition and extras…

by “general” I mean non-ZC writes and readers…

I agree 100% on the operatic musical choices they did much better then when they tried to incorporate songs.
I will have to get the DVD too just to see the full product. It may be much better.
I liked that they generally stuck with the same ending (just a minor difference but same result)
All in all this is a hard movie to pull off. I think with time I may grow to like it even more espcially the DVD version, but living up to the source material for me was a pretty high mountain to climb because of it’s depth.
Striker Murdock made a great point this probalby should have been multiple films to do it justice.

Ok. This doesn’t sound all that bad. SoItGoes is fairly critical of movies, and I would expect him to put extra-critical emphasis on this one – being the super fan-boy that he is. Giving it a B to B+ gives me great hope!
I don’t think I would ever notice the music, unless you said something…but now it’s going to drive me nuts more then likely. Thanks.
I’ll be seeing Watchmen on Saturday morning (to avoid the ass-clown seat talkers like “Mr Harlem University.”
My review will be up here shortly afterwords.
I’m actually really looking forward to the DVD with the extended cut. Another DVD to look for is the Tales of the Black Freighter story (the sub-comic inside of the watchmen Graphic Novel – which is missing from the theatrical movie). It hits shelves on March 24. The trailer is below.

I am someone who did not read the comic book. I had no connection to the characters through out the movie and I thought the plot was forced. The movie moved along at a very wierd pace with all the semi-flash backs with virtually no dialogue. This was the WORST highly anticipated movie I have EVER seen. I seriously considered leaving the theatre at about 2 hours in. I was very, very dissapointed in this movie. I can see that if you read the graphic novel that this may have been good. There was just too much missing apparently from the movie.

I was affraid it may be that way for someone not as familar with it.
I did talk to my brother who has not read it and he seemed to love it and was on his way to buy the graphic novel after the movie. He likes a lot of what Zach Snyder does though so he could be biased.

Watchmen = Awesome
I saw it this weekend. The movie was very good. I can say that I did read the comic.
It was a good mix between being faithful to the comic and converting it to a movie. I think expectations are the biggest issue with people who were disappointed.
Watchmen is a story – a crime caper. It’s not superman, Spiderman or anything else. It simply isn’t an over-action packed movie. It tells a story at a moderate pace.
With that said. I’m hoping for a prequel that covers the watchmen from the 40s. That’s the one thing that I though was missing. There was so much back story from the original minutemen that I think would just make a cool flick.

I read an article today that said this was a one and done deal according to Snyder there are no plans to go back.
I am still excited to see the entire movie on dvd. I was happy with the movie, but I might like it even more when i see it as it probably should have been in all 4 hours of its glory!
