The popular video game series Street Fighter is getting a movie reboot in ‘09 with Street Fighter:  The Legend of Chun-Li.  It looks like Smallvilles’ Kristin Kreuk is going to play the title character, Chun-Li, in this origins story that follows the popular character and her journey for justice.

After the horrific Street Fighter Movie starring Jean-Claude Van Damme (JCVD) made in 1994, I NEVER thought that studio execs would ever revisit this franchise.

However, it looks like they pulled out some big-budget for this one.  The movie actually has a fairly decent castthat includes Neal McDonough, Chris Klein and Michael Clarke Duncan.  All actors you have seen, but just may not know their names.

Watching the trailer, it doesn’t look like this is going to be a “fighting-tournament” movie like we’ve scene in other formulaic films.  Rather, this really does look like an origins story.  According to Patrick Aiello, the producer of the film:

“Justin, Ashok and Capcom got together and decided to make it more of an origin story for Chun Li. There are just way too many characters in the Street Fighter universe to cram them all into one film. We want to do each one the justice he/she deserves. So, in short, Ken and Ryu will not be appearing in this film. But, that doesn’t mean we wont see our red and white-clad heroes in potential sequels…”

Did he say potential sequels?  Holy cow, looks like they think this one may have some legs.

My take:  So far, the trailer looks good.  I pretty much think that Kristin Kreuk is pretty damn hot, and surely worthy of giving an action movie a try.  Not to mention a good supporting cast.  I’m trying really hard to find something wrong (besides it’s association with Street Fighter) , but just can’t.
