Preacher, the graphic novel series by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon, has finally found a home at Sony Pictures.  Now that HBO has abandoned the idea of making the controversial and violent comic into a mini-series, Sony Pictures has hired Oscar winning director Sam Mendes to helm the movie adaptation.

Sam Mendes is best known for his work on American Beauty, Jarhead and Road to Perdition.   Mendes had this to say about making the movie:

“It’s brilliant, it’s an incredible twisted vision. There’s so much of it you couldn’t possibly fit it all into one movie. It’s just about what you keep and what you leave out, and how you structure the story.”

So far, there aren’t any actors attached.  However, this is going to be one of those ubber-geek movies that I’m sure they will find the right bad-ass for.  With his clout, I’ll bet Mendes can get just about anybody he wants.

Preacher Synopsis: (in the graphic novel series)

It’s the “story of a down-and-out Texas preacher possessed by Genesis, a supernatural entity conceived by the unnatural coupling of an angel and a demon. Given immense powers, the preacher teamed with an old girlfriend and a hard-drinking Irish vampire and set out on a journey across America to find God — who apparently had abandoned his duties in heaven — and hold him accountable for his negligence.”

This is up there in my top choices for graphic novels I’d love to see adapted to a movie.  However, I’m a little concerned that the comic is just too controversial to be done right.  I have heard that’s why HBO dropped it.  Only time will tell…lets keep our fingers crossed.
