Kind of Blue 50th Anniversary Edition

Legacy Records is releasing a 50th Anniversary Edition of the Masterpiece that is known as Kind of Blue. (It’s by Miles Davis but i really did not have to tell you that right?) It comes with all kinds of goodies and extras and first takes etc etc. Get it at amazon for like 80 bucks.

Yeah i know it was released in 59, but they want to get a jump and get it out for Christmas I’m sure so since some of the recordings were done in 58 i guess they are just gonna run with it.

Not to dwell on that though this post is all about Kind of Blue. It is just an excuse for me to poor out to the world how much I love this album.

I love every song on this album. It is a perfect album. I actually overheard a conversation several weeks ago and folks were talking about their favorite albums. I can safely say Kind of Blue is in my top 3 favs of all time. As a guy who sticks mostly to rock music that is saying something.

The above video is Blue in Green and I thought it fit the song so really well and wanted to share it. Blue in Green is actually one of my least favorite tracks on Kind of Blue but hell with an album this good even my least fav is special.

Sadly I’ve only owned this album for six years. I had seen it on “lists” of greatness but I was never a jazz guy. I guess i was about 24 at the time and I was really starting to get into a lot of different music. So I was at the library and said what the hell lets see what this jazz stuff is all about this is supposed to be a good jazz album….. Well I took it home and listened to it. I listened to it late at night, I listened to it in the morning, I listened to it drunk, I listened to it high, I listened to it when i was Sad, I listened to it with loved ones, I listened to it on a spring day with the windows down, I listened to it when I was mad to calm down, and it sounded wonderful in every setting. Every way i spun it this album did not disapoint. It sounded great when i had it for background music and sounded even better when i put the headphones on and tried to listen closely to what these guys were doing.

How did Kind of Blue enter your life?

Say what you want about Miles Davis as a person, but please don’t ever question his Music.

Kind of Blue entered my life in the Summer of 2001, I actually had Sketches of Spin first and then decided to check out Kind of Blue. I had seen it on many (best of) lists, but never bothered to check it out, because at the time I thought that Sketches encompassed Miles’ sound, but after listening to Kind of Blue that changed.

This album reminds me of warm Summer nights in my apartment while I was at Mercer, with the windows open and Kind of Blue (among others) playing while I studied or just hung out with folks…

Good post, good memories, great music…

This is a very good album. I have had it for only a couple of years now and do appreciate its subtle amazingness. I mostly listen to it while I work and it is no surprise to me that so many people love this album.

On a side note, since knowing this album, I notice it all the time in pop culture. Most recently, a song was in an episode of Dexter.
