How much of the World do you consume in your lifetime?
I have always found this to be quite fascinating to think about. What if your garbageman (sorry, Sanitation Specialist) decided to go on strike and not pick up your trash? How long before you go crazy? My guess is that most people would freak out at only the second missed pickup. Two Weeks of trash…how many bags would that equate to? Where would you keep it or take it if nobody was there to pick it up and take it away. Most people put their waste into the trash can and put it out at the curb once a week and once it’s gone, it is no longer thought about. Where does all this shit go? What does it amount to?
Well, recently the National Geographic Channel did a special on this very subject. It’s called “Human Footprint” and it has somewhat turned me into an environmental alarmist or something. I probably won’t change my habits too drastically, but it’s nice to have shit put into perspective sometimes.
Here is the website:

This video doesn’t even really get into everything else we consume on a daily basis. Your car, the paper supplies you so casually use at work, everything you buy that is wrapped in plastic, etc.

Man great post.
It really is something that makes you sit back and think when you actually start to consider how much crap we go through and where it all goes at the end of the day.
I know some grocery stores like whole food encourage you not to use plastic bags and i think you can actually bring your own bags or something now which is pretty cool

Deep Thoughts by Jack Handey:
“Here’s a good thing to do if you go to a party and you don’t know anybody: First, take out the garbage. Then go around and collect any extra garbage that people might have, like a crumpled-up napkin, and take that out too. Pretty soon people will want to meet the busy garbage guy.”

I’ll do my part. Time to buy the “real” grocery bags at Publix. No more plastic for me. I’m going green baby….

I saw this on NG as well, it’s crazy how expansive the “human footprint” is. It takes a little while to get used to but the wife and I have started using the non-plastic bags. We got a few from Trader Joe’s and we have a big effin’ one from IKEA.
I’ll take Striker’s advise next time I’m at a party

Another thing to consider is our “footpring” outside of earth as well. I was reading an article about how this 13 year old figured out that this asteroid that was coming toward earth in the year 2029 has a 1 in 450 chance of striking earth instead of the 1 in 45,0000 chance NASA gave it.
Evidently part of the reason the chances increased was becuase of the 40,000 (yeah 40,000!) satalites we have orbiting our planet. That is just the tip of the iceberg of all the other junk we have left out there.
FYI if the asteroid does hit earth it is large enough to end us.

how does a 13 year old figure that stuff out? Seems like someone needs to go proof read his work.
“Sorry, Jimmy. I know we told you that you were smarter than the guys here at NASA and started this whole news campaign about what a genius you are and how much of a waste NASA’s funding is…BUT…you misplaced a decimal in your calculation. Don’t worry, though. The good folks at NASA still want to give you a ride in the space shuttle for your efforts. They’ve tenatively scheduled your trip for 2029 so you’ll have plenty of time to train!”

SoItGoes, don’t worry about the asteroid. I’ve already arranged for a ZC retreat at a cool location the week it’s supposed to be passing by (through) the earth. Check out the location of the retreat:
