GI Joe the Movie Slotted for 2009
GI Joe the movie is slotted to hit theaters August 7, 2009. Pushed forward by the success of Transformers, we will finally see a live action version of our favorite cartoon/comic All America Hero…..kinda.
Rumors galore have flown around the production of a live action GI Joe movie. Last year the big one was that Hasbro decided to make it, but it was going to be called “Action Man”. I am here to tell you today that that is not the case. GI Joe is currently in production and being filmed as I write this post. The movie will be called GI Joe….dropping the All American Hero.
The Action Man rumor started to circulate because Hollywood said that GI Joe was too American . Ultimately the producers of the movie went with GI Joe (I hope for obvious reasons), however they decided to change what the acronym stood for in order to appeal to a wider, more international audience.
GI Joe Acronym (old/new)
- In the 1980’s cartoon/comic/action figure: Government Issued Joe
- In the new live action GI Joe Movie: Global Integrated Joint Operating Entity
According to a post by “Destro” on HisTank.com, who attended Hasbro’s 2008 Collector Media Day Event, “This film is set up so people who do not know what G.I Joe is all about get a nice back story explaining what G.I. Joe is along with MARS and Cobra with character background stories. The film centers around a speechless Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow and the female roles of The Baroness and Scarlett play huge roles equal to if not more important then Destro and Duke. ” I would click the link to HistTank.com above to read more about what Destro saw at the event.
I have also seen reports that Cobra Commander will be involved, however this character will play more of a puppet master/background character in this film. Hopefully this signals that they have plans for more than one film.
The director and cast have all been announced. I have listed them below:
- Director: Brian Sommers (known best for the Mummy movies)
- Duke: Channing Tatum
- The Baroness: Sienna Miller
- Cobra Commander: Joseph Gordon-Levitt (rumored)
- General Hawk: Dennis Quaid
- Scarlett: Rachel Nichols
- Snake Eyes: Ray Park (known best as Darth Maul from Episode 1)
- Storm Shadow: Byung-hun Lee
- Heavy Duty: Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje
- Zartan: Arnold Vosloo (rumored)
- Ripcord: Marlon Wayans (rumored)
- Destro: David Murray (rumored)
- Breaker: Said Taghmaoui
Some big names on that list, however I’m glad to see people I don’t know too much about as well. A movie like this doesn’t need to be about “star power.”
I for one am very excited about a live action version of GI Joe. Having been my favorite toy, comic and cartoon growing up, I’ve always wanted to see this movie happen. Now, I can only hope that it turns out as good as I want it to. So far, from what I have been able to find, it seems like I am going to get my wish. YOOOO JOE!

I am very glad they decided not to call it Action Man, b/c it would have been very difficult for me to enjoy a movie called something so stupid (This only works with Horror movies, i.e. Snakes on a Plane or Clive Barker’s The Midnight Meat Train). Hopefully, Beach Head makes a cameo or something (he is my favorite character). It would be nice if he saved the day at the end of the movie.
The bar has been set very high by Transformers. Unfortunately, Transormers had a lot more going for it. It had Michael Bay directing and Spielberg producing. GI Joe gets the guy from the Mummy. Also, Transformers was kind of an alien sci-fi movie which people are open to seeing. GI Joe is more of a fight on terror type movie which I think people get enough of in real life. It is very cool that Snake Eyes is a main character, since he really is probably the most cool GI Joe.

I agree that it was in their best interest to drop Action Man. Looking forward to this. Too bad we don’t get any rock n roll, gung ho, shipwreck or other old time guys. I’m sure some will make minor appearances. I’m also sure they would like to set this up for a trilogy and bring in other popular Joe’s later.
2009 is shaping up to be a geek fest summer: Gi Joe, Wolverine: Orgins, Transformers 2, Terminator Salvation, Star Trek, Next Superman movie and i’m sure there will be more

NOTE:
I didn’t realize it when I found the pic of the new GI Joe movie logo above, but I guess that is one of the only pictures on the net. The logo hasn’t even been released “officially.” That is a just a digital snap shot that the guy wih the screen name Destro took at the Hasbro event.
