I have not been able to find as much internet clamor about this movie as I thought I would. I have noticed some reviews mentioning it in the same breath as 300 for its visual distinction and violence. Unfortunately I don’t think it lives up to those lofty expectations, but Beowulf does delivery a fun movie going experience.
I had the pleasure of seeing this last night and I must say this is one of those movies that you really need to see in the theatre. Actually, see it at an Imax if you can. If not at the very least check it out on 3D Digital. The 3D images and CG images in general are all very cool on the big screen. Plus, they give you 3D glasses to watch the movie with! Remember those old school crappy 3D glasses? Well they have been slightly updated and they really add to the film in this instance. Blood comes flying at you, spears seem like they are so close they could be used to pick your nose! Overall visually is where this movie shines. Well that and John Malkovich’s character being referred to as the “Violator Of Virgins”. Many people dream of titles in their lifetime with cool acronyms like CEO, CFO, CPA, etc. At this point i’d put being a VoV at the top of that list. Something we can all aspire to be known as.The story does have some changes but honestly I did not mind (truth be told i read the story so long ago I was a bit murky about the differences) the changes the story seemed to still flow well. I won’t review the story here because I feel fairly certain most are familiar with the age old tale.I’m really not sure how this movie got a PG-13 rating with all the sexual innuendo and violence but I’m not complaining about either. Also one portion of the movie features a midget fighting a fake Grendel. Certainly a comedy highlight of the film. Overall the story was good (Neil Gaimen does the screenplay), the violence was great, and the Visual experience was Excellent. I would recommend to those who enjoy altering their reality to do so for this movie. Oh, and I have not even mentioned the succulently beautiful CG naked Angelina Jolie. I generally have lofty expectations for movies and I would rate this movie probably around a 6.5 on a scale from 1-10. One being Ghost on Mars & Ten being Taxi Driver. This is an above average film but far from a great film. That said it is a fun movie going experience and is recommended. What did you all think? Have you seen it? Will you see it?

John Carpenter’s Ghosts On Mars is really about a 8.5.
